I just discovered this photo on my phone. I have no idea how long it’s been there. Months, probably.

Oddly, this is something I don’t think I’ve ever discussed here— in decades past, rather than just taking hit movies and dubbing or subtitling them, the Turkish film industry decided to remake a ton of now-classic titles. These remakes were generally direct rip-offs, starred Turkish actors, and were done on, ahem, modest budgets (you’ll see what I mean). The results are hilarious to our eyes, but when the films were made, they were often more popular than the Hollywood originals.

There’s a good starter list over at English Turkey. Some of the linked videos have since been removed from YouTube, but if you just click through on a few of them, you’ll find everything you could possibly want in the “related videos” column on the side. It’s amazing some of the films they couldn’t leave alone. Hilarious and mesmerising all at the same time. Link

I heard a rumour that there are t-shirts available with a line drawing of Terim’s profile and the phrase “everything is something happened,” but so far I haven’t been able to locate the alleged vendor of said alleged t-shirts. Do let me know if you spot any, because I definitely need one.

I didn’t get a great shot of this one (it was on a spectator at the marathon), but it says, “x-side eastside contest beware industrial play machines heed.”

I love it when racist nutcases have their ignorance exposed, and here’s a story that really warmed my heart: a few years ago, Austrian right-wing populist party FPÖ issued a press release calling for a return to “traditional Austrian cuisine” (i.e. white-people food), citing the “regrettable proliferation of kebab shops” (i.e. brown-people food) throughout Austria. In the quest to determine just what makes makes food “traditionally Austrian,” Manuela Honsig-Erlenburg made an interesting point that Wiener schnitzel was not invented in Vienna, as one might expect, but rather in Istanbul. So there you go, nationalists— next time you take a bite of that lovely breaded cutlet, remember that you’re eating Turkish food.

And yes, it remains a popular dish in Turkey to this day. You can get schnitzel at pretty much any restaurant in Turkey, including at fast food outlets. My favourite lunch place up the road makes a schnitzel sandwich that is out of this world. Link

“Don’t step on the grass.” It’s the only grass we have left.

I’ve seen this kind of thing many times before: the English version describes the price as 2 million, but the Turkish version spells out the words “entrance one million.” Basically it’s a tax on not being able to read Turkish, which annoys many foreigners, but I’ve always found it kind of funny.

I couldn’t resist posting this. I have no idea whom to credit for the photo, because I just ran across it in one of those e-mail forwards. But I thought you’d probably appreciate it, even though it’s pirated and slightly off-topic.

Sulu yemek does literally mean “watery food,” which doesn’t make it sound nearly as appetising as it really is. Basically sulu yemek refers to the less fancy elements of Turkish home cooking, many of which are liquid-based: beans in sauce, stews, soups, that sort of thing. Great winter food, basically.

Oddly, this picture was taken in Kemer, and although I’m very familiar with Çorbacı Mehmet, I don’t remember ever seeing that part of the sign. Clearly I block a lot of things out.
