I’ve been spending more time than I’d like to admit over at likebetter.com. The premise is simple enough: you’re presented with two images, and you click on the one you like better. Then you get two more images, rinse, repeat. After you do this a few times, the brain at the bottom of the page turns pink, letting you know it knows something about you. Click on the brain, and it tells you what it knows. Then you go back to clicking on images until it knows something else.
I’d be curious to learn something about the intelligence-gathering algorithm at work here, because of the fifty or so things the brain has told me, only three have been off the mark. Well, two really, because I actually changed my mind about one thingโ the brain was right, I would lead a cult if I had the opportunity!
I’ve just played with this for a while and it has suggested I am a 40-something man who likes to take risks. :/
It has gotten some things right, though! I found you on there and I know you like a stranger with candy.
xoxo

Hmm..maybe I’m too gray for this. I don’t know about this either/or shit. Do I have to be EITHER a night OR a morning person? I happen to be a morning person, but I would also consider myself a night person. And I have a pet, but I don’t really want it so that would put me in the middle of have and don’t have/want. I’m introverted at the moment, but I’m historically extroverted. Oh god I thought I knew myself. I’m sure the next time I click on the pink brain it’ll say, “you’re so F-ing neurotic too!” Is it normal for the brain to take 6 minutes to appear as pink?

JB– if you’re a morning person and a night person, when do you sleep? ๐
This is the cool thing about likebetter, it does make you question whether you know yourself or not… there were a lot of things it told me about myself that I initially thought, no way, that’s not me, but then after a few minutes of consideration I came around to its way of thinking.
The time the brain takes to turn pink varies, and I think I know why: let’s say it’s trying to figure out the introvert/extrovert thing, so it gives you six sets of images and you click on half the extrovert ones and half the introvert ones… it still can’t tell anything from that (50/50), so it has to give you enough image sets until you show a clear trend either way. I think if you had clicked on every introverted image without fail, it would have made its decision more quickly. So my theory is, the fact that you’re gray about things is what’s making the brain take longer to make decisions about you, because your answers have reflected your….um, bothness.
Shut up, it’s a word.

Hey Rachel, I hadn’t explored the friends thing yet… I know you can play the game and compare yourself to your friends or something similar. Are you the same username there as on your LJ?

Bothness is better than “wittical”?
Anyway thanks for tryinig to explain my duplicity. Thing is I look at the Manhattan Bridge photo and it makes me nostalgic for home so I pick it even though I might like the other photo better.
I’m not concerned about it really. It made me feel complex *smug tone*. What does concern me is that it thinks I’m a teenager. I understand why…but I’m 36. Fine, fine. what I didn’t understand was how could it not have guessed that I’m a Gemeni?

Did you read Kevin Hogan’s book: The Science of Influence?
I think, sense and see that all the things in my head pops up somewhere out of my conscious. I cannot see the source from conscious level. When I vote at likebetter.com most of the times I pick one of the pics as soon as they’re visible. It’s nothing to do with thinking. Thinking comes later. If I choose to think, it’s getting hard to decide which one I pick up. Do you share this?

I haven’t read The Science of Influence, but I’ll definitely check it out. I know what you mean about choosing without thinking, and yes, I’m exactly like that. It makes it easier than trying to analyse everything.
