Oh look, a photo of Antalya in late June! Seriously, I know I was strangely absent yesterday from everywhere, but it simply couldn’t be helped. It got up to 46 here yesterday (115 in old money); friends up the road in Side reported a local high of 50 (122F). Today I only showed a high of 44, but the same friends in Side said that it topped out at 51 there.
Basically the situation we’ve got here is that even inside the house, it has become too hot to run electronics for any length of time. Today when the sun was out I was able to have the computer on for about five minutes at a time before things started acting… not happy. Pointing the fan directly at the machine doesn’t help much, because at the moment sitting in front of that fan is akin to sitting in front of a hair dryer. Now that the sun has gone down, though, I thought I’d take a chance and let you know I’m still alive. Melting, but still alive.
We’re thinking that if this keeps up for any length of time, we might have to break down and get an air conditioner for our bedroom. I’ve been looking at 15-day forecasts for this area, and although the predictions are that this unbearable heat is temporary (as is everything else), I trust weather forecasts about as far as I can throw them. I think the plan is to wait a few days and see. I’ve priced up a few budget air conditioning units, and they’re not so expensive. The real problem is the electricity. The power in our neighbourhood went out no fewer than seven times today, no doubt due to the fact that more and more people are using air conditioners, and the power required is too much for the grid to handle. So do we want to add to that problem? And do we want sky-high electricity bills?
On the other hand, do I want to end up in the hospital from heat exaustion? I already had some problems with delirium today, trying to nap while drifting between dreams and consciousness and confusing the two. At one point a dream spilled over into real life and through the waves of heat I woke up and thought one of my housemates was some guy the police department had sent around to install an air conditioner for us. That’s how bad it’s getting. I’ve brought my blood sugar up a bit since then, though, and I’m feeling much more coherent now. A couple of ice-cold showers have helped, too.
I kind of preferred the part where I thought we were getting air conditioning, though. It was the one time today I was happy.
Wow, I didn’t think it used to get that bad in Antalya. It’s been a good few years since I’ve been back, mind you. Sounds like an air conditioner would probably not be a bad idea.

@Aral: We had one awful week last year in August where it was 53-ish for a few days, but the rest was pretty bearable. The year before that wasn’t even close, it never got higher than the low 40s (that’s not me romanticising – I keep track of weather trends in my private journal). I don’t know if this is global warming or what, but I don’t like it.
Holy god, I just realised that you’re the Aral Balkan. Ariaware Aral Balkan. Bits and Pixels Aral Balkan. That’s, um… wow. I’m going to shut up now before I embarrass myself further. 😀

Ew. I think it hit 117 here (about 47.2 in new money?), but even the cars have air conditioning. I don’t think anyone in Phoenix would buy one that didn’t. Sending thoughts of freon….

Get the air-conditioner already! They are dirt cheap nowadays, what with the payment in installments and all.
And look at it this way; when you get the air-conditioner, if and when the power fails, you get to suffer with everyone else, but when the power holds you are infinitely better off with a working A/C unit than if you don’t have one. A good deal however you look at it.
As for electricity bills, I’m sure you guys can come up with ways to conserve energy.

what does this do for your running? I always thought training for a marathon in southern Turkey in the summer is akin to insanity. I’ve dreamed of training for the Istanbul marathon which I think is in October. I can’t imagine getting up to 16 miles in august or sept.
I hope it works for you.

and i thought the philippines was bad with our high of 38. sheesh. i’ll take this plus our blasted humidity any day over anything in the 40s or 50s!!
now, our islands are in the other of our two season: the wet one. rain, rain, rain. but still sticky, sticky, sticky.
*blowing you the cool from my hand holding ice in front of my air conditioner*
and if we don’t hear from you on twitter, we’ll be stopping by here to make sure you’re okay!

I thought TEXAS was bad. . .but when it gets to be over 100 (in new money?) Well, that’s unbearable w/o ac!!!! Yeah, get that darn air conditioner! 😉 How on earth are you able to still train? I guess the cold shower is a godsend, huh?

@laurak: Same in Texas, and in fact because of so many old folks dying of heat-related problems, they passed a law about 15 years ago saying that all new domiciles had to have air conditioning units, and all new cars as well. But here it’s seen as a sissy rich-girl thing to have an air conditioner. I think we’re giving in, though.

@taujb: I think you have to have a credit card to get the installments thing, but even in one payment they’re not so expensive.
I think one other thing we’re afraid of is that if we get an a/c, we’re just going to sit in the bedroom all summer and not do anything but wait for September. Which is kind of what’s happening anyway, though.

@jake: it’s still ok at 4am, on the beach at least. My plan when it gets even hotter is to hose down in the shower fully clothed before running, and run wet and see if that helps.
I’ve also thought about doing Istanbul, but I think you’d have to train somewhere else… like Iceland.

@thelma: I don’t know, I think it’s true what they say about dry heat – certainly we’ve had some 38-and-humid days that were more unbearable than 50-and-dry.
I think I should come to the Philippines to see for myself. 😀 Certainly I would love to see a rainy season.

Jen: you’re exactly right – cold shower before and after running, and drinking lots of water. Also, training at 4AM helps.

Hang in there! And do invest in an air-conditioner! Anything to stay coool~

@Vivian: actually, it’s cooling down a bit and I think the crazy talk of “let’s not bother, it’s only for a couple of months” is winning over. Yikes!
